UK-EU SPS Agreement: New Guidance Published for Food and Meat Businesses

The UK Government has published updated guidance to help businesses prepare for the proposed UK-EU Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement, which is expected to come into force in mid-2027, subject to ongoing negotiations.

The agreement is designed to simplify the movement of agri-food products between the UK and EU by reducing border checks, paperwork and administrative requirements. For businesses operating across the meat, poultry and wider food sectors, the changes could help improve supply chain efficiency and lower trading costs.

According to Defra, the agreement aims to create smoother trade flows while maintaining high standards for food safety, animal health and plant health. Businesses are being encouraged to begin reviewing how the proposed changes may affect their operations and supply chains.

Industry bodies have broadly welcomed the publication of the guidance, while also highlighting the need for greater clarity as negotiations continue. Many businesses are seeking confirmation on the final scope of the agreement and how future regulatory alignment may impact trading arrangements with both the EU and wider international markets.

For meat and food businesses, one of the key potential benefits is the simplification of mixed-load and groupage movements, which could make smaller consignments easier and more cost-effective to transport across borders.

With implementation currently targeted for 2027, further updates are expected as negotiations progress. Businesses involved in importing, exporting, manufacturing and distributing food products should continue to monitor developments closely and assess any future operational requirements.

At Daly Trading, we will continue to follow developments surrounding the SPS agreement and provide updates on any changes that may affect international meat and poultry trade.
